December 13th Hill AFB Museum Photowalk

Somber Hillside

By Bryan William Jones,

Reserve the date: The morning of Saturday, December 13th will be the next photowalk, this time up at the Hill AFB Museum. We are planning on an early start to avoid the crowds and take advantage of a tour and some special access to the exhibits arranged by the Father-In-Law of our very own Avery Pince.

The Hill AFB Museum is one of the better aerospace museums in the United States and hosts around 180,000 visitors annually. It currently exhibits over 80 aircraft and aerospace vehicles on the grounds in addition to displays covering the history of the Air Force and Hill AFB itself.

Directions: A gate pass or DOD ID onto Hill AFB is NOT required to visit the museum. Simply take Exit 338 off Interstate 15 in Roy, Utah, and enter the museum grounds through the gate.

Meet up at 8:00am. We'll have a tour along with special access to some of the exhibits for photography, then there will be a behind the scenes tour followed by wandering the museum grounds, taking photographs at will.

Please confirm attendance and participate in discussion for this event over on the Photowalk Utah Flickr group.

Looking forward to seeing you there.

Note: New start time of 8:00am.

Cool! I've been to the HAFB Museum many times with my kids. It is a great place. They seem to allow tourists to take quick snapshots with point and click cameras, but with all the access barriers to prevent kids from climbing all over everything and breaking things, I've never felt that they would be to keen about someone setting up lights or using a tripod with a big camera. Is our group going to be able to do that? Or are we going to be just another tour group? I'd also like to bring a model or two and do some shots outside with the airplanes in the background. Would that be alright?

I would love to be able to bring my boy Jett! Like Jacom asked, would it be okay? This sounds so great! I'm excited and planning on coming!

@jacom stephens, We negotiated this visit for the purposes of the Photowalk Utah club and the non-profit benefit of its members. Any explicitly commercial uses of their grounds or aircraft will have to be handled completely independently of the Photowalk Utah group. The point of these visits is to provide our members with an inclusive, group access to unique places and opportunities to further their skills in a non-threatening, non-competitive environment. We are not in the business of supplementing individual photographers incomes, especially if it comes at the expense or exclusion of other members participation.

As for kids, they should certainly be welcome provided they will not be crawling over everything and breaking things. :-)

@BWJONES
This might be an odd thing to say but your comment response was super well written and did such a great job of answering his question that I just had to make note of it.
It was like an easy to understand lawyer just rattling off important information off the top of his head.
I'm being serious... it was cool.
And I'm glad that's the point of the photowalks too! Makes me more willing to bring along my friends who aren't pro-photographers.
They feel more at ease when they don't see crazy elaborate set-ups.
